How to Read an Exercise Page
A guided tour of every field on a PlainExercise detail page, what each term means, how to interpret it, and how to use the page to make a training decision.
Why a reading guide
Every exercise page on PlainExercise has the same structure. The page layout is deliberately boring: a header strip, a"muscles worked" box, step-by-step instructions, common mistakes, a who-it-is-for section, a progression path, safety notes, variations, related exercises, and a source footer. Once you've read one page, you've read them all.
That boring consistency is the value. If you know where to look, you can extract"can I do this exercise, and should I?" in under a minute. This guide walks through each section in the order it appears on the page, explains what it means, and shows how to use it to make a training decision.
The header strip
Below the exercise name is a horizontal strip of four tags:
- Level - beginner, intermediate, or expert. If the level is above your training experience, scroll down to the progression path before attempting the movement.
- Mechanic - compound (multiple joints and muscles) or isolation (a single joint and primary muscle). Compound lifts deliver more bang for your time budget; isolation lifts are useful when you need to target a specific muscle that isn't fully trained by compounds.
- Force - push, pull, or static (isometric). Push and pull is a useful axis for constructing workout splits, see the Building a Weekly Workout Split guide.
- Category - strength, stretching, cardio, plyometric, or similar. Categories follow the Free Exercise DB taxonomy.
Muscles worked
The Muscles Worked box has two halves. On the left is the primary muscle - the one doing most of the work. On the right are the secondary muscles - the ones that contribute but aren't the main driver. Each muscle is a clickable link to its own hub page, which lists every other exercise that targets it. If you know you want to train your lats today but don't want to do a pull-up specifically, click"lats" and pick a different movement.
The primary/secondary split follows the Free Exercise DB convention. In borderline cases where the data sources disagree, we err on the conservative side, a biceps curl is tagged biceps-only even though forearm flexors also work.
Step-by-step instructions
The numbered instructions are the raw step descriptions from the source dataset, lightly edited for clarity. They assume you can see the movement, PlainExercise does not publish videos. If you can't picture the setup from the text alone, search for a demonstration video from a trusted trainer or coach. Text is a fast reference, not a replacement for visual demonstration on complex movements.
Common mistakes
Each page lists five common mistakes specific to the movement's force type, mechanic, and level. These are not scraped from a data source, they are written by the PlainExercise editorial team as an information-gain layer over the raw data. If you've been doing the exercise for a while and it isn't working (no progress, nagging pain, plateaued), scan this section first. Most"my exercise isn't working" problems trace to one of these five.
Who this is for / not for
Two side-by-side cards. The left card ("Who this is for") identifies the trainee the exercise is best suited to, typically a mix of experience level, goal, and equipment access. The right card ("Who this is NOT for") flags situations where the exercise is a poor fit, acute injuries, experience mismatches, physician clearance needs.
If you find yourself in the"not for" column, don't stop training, swap the exercise. The Related section at the bottom of the page points to peer exercises that target the same muscle and may be a better fit.
Progression path
This section tells you what to do when the exercise becomes easy. Three categories of progression are common: add reps, add load, or switch to a harder variation. Safety notes
A short yellow-bordered box with bullet points specific to the movement. These are general notes, not medical advice. Common items:"pain is a stop signal, not a soreness signal", warm-up requirements, injury red flags, and a reminder to consult a physician for pre-existing conditions. Read them even if you've done the exercise a hundred times, small details save joints.
Variations and related exercises
The Variations section lists equipment swaps of the parent exercise (e.g., a dumbbell version of a barbell bench press). These are computed from the source data, so occasionally a listed variation is theoretically valid but practically odd. Use judgment.
The Related Exercises section lists up to eight other exercises that target the same primary muscle, drawn from the database. This is the fastest way to discover alternatives when the current exercise isn't the right fit.
Footer, source and disclaimer
The last block on every page cites the upstream data source (Free Exercise DB, wger.de) and repeats the medical disclaimer. The"last updated" date tells you when the editorial content on the page was last reviewed. Underlying exercise data changes rarely; editorial framing is refreshed at least annually.
Putting it together
The fastest way to use an exercise page is top-down in under a minute: header strip (can I do this?), muscles worked (does it train what I want?), instructions (skim the movement), common mistakes (catch the obvious errors), variations (if equipment is a problem, swap here), related (if the page is wrong for me, try a peer movement). Frequently asked questions
What does"primary muscle" mean?
The muscle that does most of the work during the movement. Secondary muscles contribute but are not the main driver. If you only have time for one set, train the primary.
What is the difference between compound and isolation?
Compound exercises train multiple joints and muscles at once (squat, bench press, deadlift). Isolation exercises focus on a single joint and a primary muscle (bicep curl, leg extension, calf raise). Compound lifts are more time-efficient; isolation lifts fill gaps that compounds miss.
How do I know if an exercise is too advanced for me?
Check the level field at the top of the page. If you haven't mastered the prior level consistently, work the progression path first. A beginner attempting an expert movement under load is a recipe for injury.
Worked example: putting the numbers together
A novice lifter performing 3 sets per muscle group per week typically gains roughly 0.5 kg of lean tissue per month in the first six months. A lifter at 12 sets per muscle per week, well within evidence-based range, typically gains 1.0 – 1.4 kg per month over the same window, a 2 – 3x improvement that compounds across an entire training year.

Use this guide as scaffolding rather than prescription. Identify your single most important training goal, anchor your weekly volume in the evidence-based range from the table above, and pick exercises you genuinely enjoy and can perform with clean form, adherence outweighs theoretical optimality once the volume target is met. Re-evaluate every 8 – 12 weeks: if you are progressing on the metric that matters (strength gain, body composition, race pace, recovery quality), continue the program; if you have plateaued for two consecutive cycles, adjust one variable at a time. Always consult a licensed clinician before beginning a new program if you have cardiovascular conditions, are pregnant, are post-injury, or are over 50 and previously sedentary.
