Training for Strength vs Hypertrophy vs Endurance
How rep ranges, rest, load, and volume change when you train for maximum strength, muscle size, or muscular endurance, and why you usually want a mix.
Same exercises, different goals
The same squat trains strength, muscle size, and endurance, but how you load it, how many reps you do, and how long you rest changes which adaptation dominates. The exercise selection matters less than the loading protocol.
This is why a single program can't optimize for all three goals simultaneously. Trying to maximize strength AND size AND endurance in the same block produces mediocre results in all three. Training blocks should emphasize one goal at a time, with the other two maintained at a floor.

Why it works
High-rep work improves lactate tolerance, capillarization, and mitochondrial density, the physiological bases of sustained sub-maximal effort. Short rest periods compound the demand on the cardiovascular and metabolic systems.
Who it suits
Combat athletes, endurance-sport athletes, and anyone whose life or work demands sustained sub-maximal effort (military, first responders, certain manual occupations). Less useful as a primary focus for general-fitness adults, since strength and hypertrophy work already produces some endurance carryover.
Blending the three
Most general-fitness adults do not need to pick one. A simple blend that works for the long run:
