Identify your single most important training goal, anchor your weekly volume in the evidence-based range from the table above, and pick exercises you genuinely enjoy and can perform with clean form, adherence outweighs theoretical optimality once the volume target is met. Re-evaluate every 8 – 12 weeks: if you are progressing on the metric that matters (strength gain, body composition, race pace, recovery quality), continue the program; if you have plateaued for two consecutive cycles, adjust one variable at a time. What a split actually does
A workout split is a weekly schedule. It answers two questions: which muscle groups get trained on which day, and how many days per week you show up. Everything else, exercise selection, set and rep ranges, load progression, sits on top of the split.
The reason splits matter is recovery. Muscles need roughly 48-72 hours of recovery between hard sessions. A well-designed split places hard sessions for the same muscle group far enough apart that you arrive at each one recovered. A poorly-designed split trains the same muscle two days in a row, which is a surefire way to stop progressing.
Full-body (3 days/week)

Best for: beginners, time-crunched adults, people who travel a lot. The advantage is that missing a session is not catastrophic, the next session still trains everything. Downside: session length can creep toward 90 minutes if you try to train every muscle thoroughly.
Upper/Lower (4 days/week)

Body-part split (5+ days/week)
Each day trains one muscle group: chest day, back day, shoulder day, leg day, arm day. Popular among advanced bodybuilders.
Best for: advanced trainees with years of training age and strong recovery. Not recommended for beginners or intermediates, the weekly frequency per muscle group is too low to drive optimal growth, and the session length per muscle is higher than needed. Most adults would be better served by upper/lower.
How to pick a split
Start with your honest weekly training budget. How many days per week can you show up, reliably, for the next 12 weeks? If the answer is 2-3, use full-body. If 4, use upper/lower. If 5-6, use push/pull/legs. That's the whole decision.
Don't overfit. A"better" split that you won't stick to is worse than a"simpler" split that you will. Consistency over 12 weeks matters more than the theoretical superiority of any specific template.

Training the same muscle two days in a row without recovery. Skipping leg day. Doing arms more than chest or back. Switching splits every week because a social media post said a new one is optimal. Running any split for fewer than 6 weeks before evaluating whether it works for you.

Worked example: training time budget
A full-body 3-day split at 50 minutes per session requires 150 minutes per week, just 2.5 hours. That meets the WHO recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week (100% of the guideline) and leaves room for a weekend hike or recreational sport. A 6-day push/pull/legs split at 50 minutes per session requires 300 minutes per week, double the WHO minimum, a bigger time commitment that only pays off if your recovery and schedule can genuinely support six sessions.
